Nobody looked at the Nintendo e-Reader in 2002 and thought, "Yeah, that's a speedrunning machine." It was a peripheral built for casual fun — the kind of thing you pulled out at a sleepover, swiped a card, and laughed at for ten minutes before moving on to something else. Nintendo marketed it to kids who collected trading cards. It came bundled with Pokémon content. It was, by every surface-level measure, about as far from competitive gaming as you could get.

And yet, here we are.

A growing cluster of runners on Speedrun.com and in niche Discord servers have started treating e-Reader games with the same obsessive rigor they'd apply to any other classic title. They're mapping out optimal routes, cataloging glitches, debating card-scan order, and yes — posting legitimate world records on games most people have never heard of. It's one of the stranger subcultures to emerge from the retro gaming world in recent years, and honestly? It makes a lot of sense once you dig into it.

Why the e-Reader, and Why Now?

Timing matters here. The broader speedrunning community has spent the last decade exhausting the obvious candidates — Super Mario Bros., Ocarina of Time, Metroid. Runners looking for something fresh have been pushing into increasingly obscure corners of gaming history, and the e-Reader is about as obscure as it gets on a mainstream platform.

There's also a practical appeal. Because the e-Reader library is so small and so underexplored, runners have a genuine shot at being the world record holder on a title rather than fighting against a field of thousands who've been optimizing the same game for years. The barrier to entry for being competitive is lower, even if the barrier to entry for owning the hardware is not.

That hardware barrier is real, by the way. Authentic e-Reader setups aren't cheap anymore, and getting cards in good enough condition to scan cleanly adds another layer of cost. Some runners work around this with emulation, though as anyone in the e-Reader community will tell you, emulating dot-code scanning is its own particular headache. The runners who go legit with physical hardware have a kind of credibility cachet that matters in these circles.

The Scan Is Part of the Run

Here's what makes e-Reader speedrunning genuinely different from almost anything else in the hobby: the act of loading the game is part of the run.

For most speedgames, you hit reset, mash through title screens, and go. With the e-Reader, you're swiping cards through a sensor strip before a single frame of gameplay appears. That scan process — which Nintendo treated as a fun tactile gimmick — turns out to be a meaningful variable. Card condition affects read success rates. Swipe angle and speed matter. Running a multi-card game means you're executing a physical sequence under time pressure, and fumbling a scan can cost several seconds.

Runners have started developing what you might call "scan technique" as a discrete skill set. How you hold the card, how fast you pull it through, whether you go single-pass or prep for a rescan — these are real considerations. It's the kind of thing that sounds almost absurd until you watch a side-by-side comparison of a sloppy scan versus a clean one on a competitive run. The difference is visible.

Some of the more technically-minded runners have even started mapping out which cards in multi-card sets scan most reliably, treating card quality as a gear optimization problem the same way a fighting game player might think about controller latency.

The Games Themselves Hold Up

It'd be easy to assume that e-Reader games are too shallow for meaningful speedrunning — that once you've seen the content, there's nothing left to optimize. That assumption keeps getting disproved.

Take the Kirby's Adventure e-Cards, which unlocked bonus stages in the GBA game. Runners working those stages have found that the unlocked content has its own internal logic, its own quirks, and yes, its own exploitable behavior. The Mario Bros. e-Reader cards similarly opened up content with more depth than the packaging suggested. Even standalone dot-code minigames — the short, self-contained stuff — have proven to have routing decisions worth arguing about.

Glitch hunting has been particularly productive. Because these games were never really designed with competitive play in mind, the developers weren't thinking about the ways a player might deliberately break them. That oversight is a gift to runners. Several e-Reader titles have yielded collision bugs, input tricks, and sequence breaks that the original programmers almost certainly never anticipated. Documenting those discoveries has become its own cottage industry within the community.

A Community Built on Shared Obscurity

What strikes me most about the e-Reader speedrunning scene isn't the records or the glitches — it's the vibe. These runners share a specific kind of camaraderie that comes from caring deeply about something almost nobody else cares about. There's no mainstream audience to perform for. No Twitch category with thousands of viewers. Just a handful of people who find genuine joy in pushing a forgotten piece of hardware to its limits.

That shared obscurity creates a tight-knit dynamic. Runners are generous with knowledge because there's no real incentive to hoard it — the community is small enough that growing it matters more than protecting a competitive edge. New runners get walked through hardware setup, card sourcing, and emulation workarounds without much gatekeeping. It has the feel of a scene in its early days, before hierarchy and drama have had time to calcify.

For those of us who've been following the e-Reader since its original run, watching this community form is genuinely exciting. The device always felt like it had more going on under the hood than Nintendo — or the market — gave it credit for. Speedrunners, of all people, are the ones proving that out.

The Bigger Picture

Speedrunning has a long history of finding competitive depth in games that were never designed for competition. The e-Reader fits that tradition perfectly. It was built for casual fun, dismissed as a commercial failure, and left to gather dust in closets and card binders for twenty-plus years. Now a small group of dedicated players is treating it like a serious platform, and the results are legitimately interesting.

If you've never watched an e-Reader speedrun, it's worth an hour of your time — not because the gameplay is spectacular, but because of what it represents. Someone decided this thing was worth taking seriously. They put in the hours, built the community, and started finding things nobody had found before.

That's what good speedrunning communities do. And apparently, even the e-Reader gets one.
